Description
Multi-material printing for CORE One and CORE One+ The Original Prusa MMU3 is an optional add-on for the Original Prusa CORE One and CORE One+ that enables printing with up to five filaments on a single nozzle system. Load up to five filaments of your choice, slice the object in PrusaSlicer or EasyPrint, start the print job—and the rest is fully automatic, delivering excellent quality with minimal waste. Fastest single-nozzle filament switching With optimized firmware and clever engineering, the MMU3 offers rapid filament swaps, typically ranging from 35 to 45 seconds. Since a multi-material print often involves hundreds or even thousands of changes, these time savings can reduce overall print durations by hours compared to competing systems. Efficient operation with clean transitions Every filament change requires purging the previous material from the nozzle to prevent color contamination. The MMU3 minimizes contamination using an intelligent nozzle cleaning method: during filament switches, the printer softens and removes material from the nozzle together with any debris. This results in clean transitions while requiring only a small amount of filament to be purged. The excess material is efficiently deposited into a compact wipe tower beside the print object. The wipe tower is designed as an efficient, partially hollow structure that purges filament and stabilizes nozzle pressure, while keeping all purged material collected in one place. Reduced plastic waste with advanced purge strategies To reduce waste even further, PrusaSlicer includes smart options such as wipe-to-infill (using the model’s infill instead of a wipe tower) and wipe-to-object (using another object as the wipe target). Wipe-to-object can produce a very colorful “sacrificial” item—ideal when you need a functional part or plan to paint it later and want to minimize plastic waste. What you can do with 5-filament printing With five filaments loaded and automatically managed by the MMU3, you can create: Multi-color decorative models with crisp color separation Logos, text and detailed markings integrated into prints Multi-material parts with distinct visual/functional sections Functional prints using soluble support materials (e.g., PVA/BVOH) Complex projects that benefit from frequent, automated filament changesOutstanding compatibility with no vendor locks The spoolholders are designed to hold a wide variety of filament spools, including large 2 kg spools, ensuring compatibility with many third-party materials. Thanks to the open design, you can also download (or design) custom spoolholders—for example, for paper-based spools that are more prone to damage. Smooth filament feeding with buffer cassette The filament feeding system is engineered for smooth, dependable performance. Filament is first loaded into a buffer cassette, then routed into the MMU3 unit mounted on top of the printer, and finally fed into the extruder. This arrangement minimizes resistan...
